Statement on Killer Vance Boelter
Our prayers go out to the Hortman and Hoffman families during this time of horrific and senseless loss.
Personal political violence has a long history in America. And it’s always been wrong. Vance Boelter’s killing and harming of Democratic elected representatives in Minnesota was a cowardly and repugnant act. Unsurprisingly, mainstream media likes to emphasize those they can brand as “conservative” or “Christian” while ignoring the many shooters who espoused a decidedly leftist secular worldview. We would suggest the killer was neither “conservative” nor “Christian” but an emotionally and psychologically disturbed man; his actions belie a worldview that upholds inherent human dignity. The news media that regularly claims we need to be more aware of mental health issues is the same one ignoring the mounting evidence that the killer, Boelter, was not mentally well. Maybe all politicians should temper their vitriolic political rhetoric across the board.
We don’t know the killer’s motives, but we know this: anyone who espouses a pro-life worldview yet acts like judge, jury and executioner is clearly not pro-life. Just as Frederick Douglass didn’t promote the killing of slaveholders, not one pro-life organization or leader promotes the killing of abortionists. Boelter’s actions don’t change the fact that abortion is evil and has violently taken the lives of over 65 million innocent people, including hundreds of mothers, since Roe. Everyone has the God-given right to life no matter the age, location, or political affiliation.
